Lughole

Sheffield DIY venue The Lughole needs YOU!

COVID-19 has had a huge impact on everybody, the last 11 months have been tough on so many levels. The timing couldn’t have been worse for one of Sheffield’s DIY music venue and creative space.

The Lughole is a not-for-profit project that has given a home to many projects in Sheffield since 2013 when they opened up in the city centre. Unfortunately their DIY ethics aren’t for everybody and they have had to fight to survive over the years.

Like all good creatives, this group of volunteers have battled through, however they knew their city centre spot couldn’t be their home for forever.

Finding a suitable and affordable location isn’t easy when you want to house rehearsal rooms, a live music venue and a bar so that the team could continue to fulfil the roles that they set out to when they initially launched.

Good news, The Lughole II has a home, in Sheffield’s independent and creative neighbourhood of Kelham Island. Unfortunately work was set to transform the former joinery workshop last spring, as the first lockdown kicked in.

Sheffield has a habit of producing great music, many of whom start off and grow from rehearsing and playing in small, independent venues which are disappearing. This isn’t a new thing, however COVID-19 has increased the pressure on those who were just about surviving.

The plan laid out back in February 2020 was for work to be completed and doors to open in June 2020.

The Lughole has received grants that have allowed them to continue work on the former joinery workshop in Kelham Island which will consist of 5 practice rooms, a bar and a 200 capacity music venue. The focus is to launch The Lughole II in phases, starting with the practice rooms.

They hope to have the music venue ready to open when restrictions allow them too, however help (volunteers, donations and grants) is required for this to happen.

There’s a few ways that you can support this great DIY collective and help Sheffield’s creatives blossom.

  • You can donate to their Go Fund Me campaign here (they’ve currently raised £12,245 towards their £20,000 target)
  • Buy a scarf here
  • Keep an eye on their social media accounts for volunteer shout outs – Facebook & Instagram
