“But, Boris, enough with the stats, when can we go to the pub?” is the question we’ve been for thinking for months. Yesterday (22nd February) the Prime Minister announced the governments roadmap out of lockdown with some best case scenario dates.
If the vaccine roll out continues to be a success and everybody behaves themselves then the 17th May will be the day we’re allowed back in the boozer however, good news guys, you might not be allowed to drink inside until then but beer gardens could be open as early as 12th April.
Don’t get your hopes up too much though, if we’ve learnt anything this year, we’ve learned that Boris loves a u-turn, it was only last month when he changed his mind about schools within 48 hours, a lot can happen in 7 weeks.
October was the last time we were allowed in a pub, before Sheffield was placed into tier 3, fittingly the last pint we had was in The Wellington‘s beer garden as it was full inside, we can’t wait to return.
Thankfully The Outdoor City that is Sheffield is blessed with some great beer gardens, here’s just a few for you and your 5 mates to enjoy.

The Scenic Spots
When it comes to hidden gems, The Gardeners Rest in Neepsend tops our list. This community-run pub is an eccentric place, every corner is filled with a surprise, including the beer garden which sits by the River Don. You might be in the centre of Sheffield’s food and drink heartland but you won’t know it when your sat in this tranquil space. Further down the Don is Kelham Kitchen & Wine Bar.
If you like water, The Dorothy Pax, at Victoria Quays is a great spot, it’s new neighbour, True Loves will hopefully open too for some canal side drinks.
Sheffield’s hills might be a killer when it comes to getting anywhere but they also gift us with Beer Gardens With A View. We could spend many hours at The Blake Hotel & The Blind Monkey in Walkley or over in Heeley at The Brothers Arms drunkenly pointing out Sheffield landmarks.
The Norfolk Arms and The Maynard might not be on the doorstop for many but the picturesque Peak District views are worth the visit.
The Spacious Spots
The Rising Sun is a triple threat of a pub. The Fulwood boozer, is ran by Abbeydale Brewery which guarantees great beers on tap, they also do next level pub grub but most importantly (for now), they have loads of outdoor space so they’ll be plenty of room, even with social distancing.
It wasn’t that long ago that The Millowners Arms was just part of Kelham Island Museum‘s exhibit. Thankfully it was given a new lease of life, however the cosy pub could have been killed off with social distancing measures but it ended up becoming one of heroes of Summer 2020 for drinkers as the museums car park was utilised as a beer garden and it had Friday night pub atmosphere without having to scramble at the bar.
Dryad Works, a new warehouse in Neepsend is set to open with space for over 1000 seats!
The Festival Vibes
Peddler is more than just a street food market. The monthly warehouse event in Kelham shares both inside and outdoor space for great food, drinks and good times. The lively atmosphere will no doubt be enhance with The Factory Floor bar which opened on the 92 Burton Road complex last year.
Just up the round from Peddler is SteelYard Kelham, an ever-growing hub of places to eat and drink Monday to Sunday with plenty of terrace space including Decks which is unlike anywhere else is the city, offering expertly crafted cocktails, tunes and Ibiza feels.
The City Centre Spots
There’s not a huge amount of great places to enjoy a beer in the sun at the heart of Sheffield city centre however Forum Bar & Kitchen, on the cusp on Devonshire Green can feel like your on holiday if you pick the right afternoon. The Beer Engine just off London Road has a great outdoor sun trap that could also join the hidden gem club.
Triple Point Brewing bar will also have be open with heated outdoor space, great beers plus burgers by Twisted Burger Co.
Real Ale Spots
Sheffield’s real ale heritage thankfully isn’t in the past. Looking to get the perfect freshly poured pint then The Crow, The Bar Stewards, Shakespeares, The Fat Cat, Kelham Island Tavern and the Riverside will make the perfect pub crawl whilst you can’t go wrong at Yellow Arch and Saw Grinders Union who also have plenty of outdoor space and a great beer selection in Kelham.
Please note, these dates are a best case scenario based on the governments roadmap announced on 22nd February 2021. A lot can happen in a couple of months!
