Lockdown Update: The Tower of Bagel

It’s been a mad few weeks. Our daily lives have changed, we miss seeing the friendly faces behind our favourite independents. We are sure you do too, so we thought we’d check in.

Not only have they had to adapt their own lifestyle to the new normal, their business has had to change too.

We caught up with Jonny who runs The Tower of Bagel bakery.

What was your initial reaction to lockdown?

‘Oh dear’ in a slightly distracted but concerned tone. And then shit better sort summat!

How has your business changed over the past few weeks?

There has been an increase in orders via Regather which has been great as all my shop and cafe orders have gone apart from Beanies.

I now bake sourdough Challah and yeasted wholemeal loaves for folk in Heeley and Meersbrook.

How do you see the long-tern impact on small businesses?

Really hard to say. I have been lucky on one level as my business is quite flexible with little restrictions placed on me (apart from capacity) .

Other businesses may struggle to pick up and  keep going after the lockdown. No one knows what the new normal will be. Change is emotionally draining too.  So much is down to personal energy, physical fitness and determination as well as financial health.

What has been your daily coping strategy in these crazy times?

Really lucky to go out to bake every day (that’s also my family’s coping strategy!) and when I come back use the front garden to do circuits with my daughter – burpees, step hops, step ups and  sit ups. Sleep very well after that!
